STYLE GURU STYLE: Cool Off In Culottes

According to style bloggers and Fashionistas alike, skinny pants are out and wide leg pants are in. In addition to the skinny vs wide leg debate, more and more women are changing their preferred pant length to a hem that ends mid-calf. This makes culottes the perfect choice for these trends since they combine both the wide leg and midi length currently desired. These pants are seen more frequently in street style photos, however, Tibi’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection was filled with culottes. Since this was their fall show, the pants were paired with sweaters and jackets of the same color highlighting the versatility of culottes, which can be worn in the summer, as well as the fall.

One thing I loved about their show was their colors, particularly in look five , which is an unusual hue for fall and winter. Fortunately, I happened to own a pair of sky blue culottes, which were very similar to the color in look five. I did not have a top in the same color so I went with a neutral, printed top. The top is very appropriate for summer because it is lightweight and the kimono sleeve makes it more unique and feminine. The clothing in Tibi’s show was very soft and luxurious and I translated this trait into the colors of my outfit. Instead of wearing a heavy knit, I gave the ensemble softness through lighter and muted tones which were also exhibited in Tibi’s runway show. I noticed that many of their shapes were loose and tailored and I imitated this contemporary silhouette through the looseness of my blouse and pants, which augment the human figure.

To accessorize this look, I wore Ted Baker sandals in muted tones that paired with the top nicely. I added silver and gold jewelry to dress up the look a little, but still keep the look casual. To dress the look up even more, take a tip from Tibi and switch the sandals for a neutral toned heel.

Aside from being trendy, culottes have many benefits. Lately they have been a go-to for professional women, hoping to fend off the summer heat. Many women decide to buy them in linen or cotton because they are more breathable fabrics. Aside from office activities, they can be taken from day to night with a pair of heels and a silk top. In preparation for the fall, consider adding culottes to your own wardrobe.
