STYLE GURU STYLE: Cold Shoulder

Everyone celebrates spring by wearing more lightweight and exposed clothing. My absolute favorite choice for the warmer weather is an off-the-shoulder top. I would consider it a wardrobe essential instead of trend. It is much more subtle way to show just the right amount of skin and introduce those summertime vibes again. The spring 2016 ready-to-wear alice + olivia runway show showcases elegant dresses and tops with the off-the-shoulder style. One particular look paired a ruffled sleeve off-the-shoulder top with an elaborate denim skirt. I was inspired to put together a look with denim and a nicer fabric like chiffon.

I decided to choose a vibrant red color top since I tend to wear darker shades a lot more often. The weather is constantly fluctuating so I like to wear tights when I am not too confident in how warm it is actually going to be. I wore my DIY Levi Brand Jeans cut into high-waisted shorts. It is ideal to buy a pair of thrifted jeans and turn them into shorts yourself because you get to decide how long and how destroyed you want them to look. It also won’t cost you a fortune!

The top is the main star of the show but you can sometimes start to feel a bit bare with off-the-shoulder tops. When you feel like something is missing, throw on a classic chain cascade necklace to add a bit of pizazz. I am a big fan of this leather zip-up backpack because it looks small but can fit a ton. It’s also always fun to accessorize your accessories, so choose a fun keychain like my pom pom. I kept it fairly simple with my footwear choice. My Kenneth Cole booties do exactly what I want them to—they give me height and comfort at the same time.
