STYLE GURU STYLE: Classically Chic

The spring 2015 ready-to-wear show from Michael Kors is all about dressing for sunshine and warmer weather. After a winter of neutral shades and heavy fabric, this runway show appears lively and fresh. This beautiful collection was filled with classic silhouettes, bright colors and bold florals. The outfits were kept simple and minimal, which make for easy dressing.

One of my favorite looks from the collection was number 37 that features a very timeless ensemble. A button-up shirt tucked into a skirt never fails to look put together and chic. When going through my wardrobe to recreate this look, it quickly became obvious to me that I have a noticeable lack of longer, flowing skirts. This definitely needs to be corrected at some point soon, but I still wanted to find a way to channel this runway look. The solution came in a vibrant blue dress that is pleated in the skirt. I paired it with a light blue button-up denim shirt, which I knotted to emphasize the waist. Tying the ends of a button-up shirt is an alternative to tucking it in, but still creates a nice silhouette. The central knot was also reminiscent of the runway look that had a large brown belt around the waist.

Accessories are the best way to add personality to an outfit so I tried to maintain the vibe of the collection with my own flair. This meant staying neutral with a black bag but adding a pair of leopard print flats. There were floral patterns throughout the show, so I added a flowered statement necklace and earrings. For makeup, I went simple like the models in the collection and wore only a light pink lip. The resulting look is clearly channeling Michael Kors’s vision for spring, but with my own spin on it. Remember that runway looks are a great guide to creating an outfit although you do not need follow them exactly. Runways are fantastic inspiration but play around, add some changes and truly make a look entirely your own!
