STYLE GURU STYLE: Camel, the New Neutral

February 17th, 2016 at 2:00am

The new pre-fall 2016 trends were all about pastel colors and prints. One trend that carried over from the fall 2015 fashions are neutrals. Neutrals are trendy for almost every season, from bright whites in the winter to simple beige in the spring. But this February, my favorite neutral color is camel. Camel came into fall fashion with a bang and has never left. The popular hue became a staple for outerwear in the fall 2015 runway with the camel coat. Reinvented throughout fashion history, camel coats have become a true classic. These modern coats continue to grow in popularity and the Givenchy pre-fall 2016 collection proved it.

The Givenchy pre-fall 2016 show was filled with white, beige and black, plus an occasional splash of hot pink or rustic red. The collection also included romantic details like lace and a variety of Victorian-inspired florals. My favorite look from the show was a shawl-collared camel coat. The coat was styled with high-waisted black skinny leather pants with zippers on the ankles, a white tank top with lace embroidery along the chest and a bell-sleeved cardigan with shear, white ruffles outlining the entire sweater. To top off the look, the model wore sleek leather black boots and carried a black snake skin handbag. Overall, the look was very chic and classic which is perfect for the work day, running errands, or a lunch with friends.

For my look, I went the more casual route. Instead of a heavy duty camel coat, I opted for an oversized camel knit sweater. To keep the attention on the sweater, I chose a simple black top and paired it with distressed high-waisted dark wash jeans. Sticking with neutrals, I went with black, Western-styled ankle booties. I finished off the look with my Michael Kors tote bag to keep my laptop and notebooks with me while going from class to class or being studious at a local coffee shop.

What I loved about the Givenchy pre-fall collection is that I could see myself wearing something from each look, from the shawl-collared camel coat to the oversized, boxy suit jackets. I’m looking forward to style more looks that are inspired from the pre-fall 2016 collections.

Get My Look: 1. A textured camel cardigan. 2. Any basic black T-shirt. 3. A pair of distressed skinny jeans.
