STYLE GURU STYLE: Brocade and Suede

Fashion has always been cyclical. Styles from the past are revisited and take on a new life in the present day. I’m sure no one is stranger to the revival of ’90s in the fashion of recent years with bucket hats, choker necklaces and crop tops becoming commonplace. More recently, fashion has shifted with the styles of the ’70s making their comeback on the runways with flared silhouettes, suede fabrics and fringe detailing.

The fall 2015 alice + olivia ready-to-wear collection was no exception. Inspired by ’70s bohemian style and rock-and-roll, this glamorous collection revisited the era by featuring vivid jacquards, high necklines and rich jewel tones, with pieces ranging from wide-leg trousers and suede shorts to pant suits and floor-length vests. In much of this collection, with all of the strong detailing, the fabric was the focus with simple and tailored silhouettes to complement them.

In transitioning this runway look to real-life, I chose this patterned A-line suede dress. What I love about this dress is its bold print, which is reminiscent of a brocade design, plus it’s so soft and comfortable, which is always a win. Additionally, I was inspired by the layering in the collection and opted to add a black leather vest to add some texture and structure to the look. Finally, I completed my look with a simple pair of suede ankle boots and minimal gold accessories, as with a pattern so bold, you really don’t need to add too much.
