STYLE GURU STYLE: Bringing Back The Cape

In the past few weeks, I’ve gotten to explore a new city and new fashion trends. With the onset of brisk London breezes, I found myself searching for an upgrade from big sweaters and fleeces.

I found inspiration in Hussein Chalayan’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear show which featured several incredible ensembles for the chillier months. In addition to gorgeous evening gowns, models were styled in structured blazers, bold menswear and leather jackets. The one particular outfit that caught my eye was on the model wearing a solid wool cape over black pants and black, shiny boots. It was clean, simple and sleek. The uniqueness of the cape was enough to give the outfit a wow-factor while the darker color palette kept it from overwhelming onlookers. Maybe capes are not just for superheroes or for supermodels!

I decided London was the perfect place to test out this runway trend with my navy blue Ted Baker cape, a 21st birthday present from a stylish aunt of mine. The cape can be an ideal edition to outfits already owned by most people as you can pair it with dark, skinny pants and a long sleeved shirt, or put it over a blouse, pencil skirt and black tights. It is a fresh, new option for outerwear. If you are seeking to enhance your personal style and infuse sophistication into your wardrobe, the cape is the answer!

Capes are a nod to the past to fashion icons like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. In recent months, modern celebrities, such as Kourtney Kardashian and Anne Hathaway, have been spotted sporting this fabulous form of outwear. In many an episode of Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester was styled in gorgeous capes, and if Blair Waldorf endorses something, it’s got to be good!

Get My Look: 1. The cape 2. Dark jeans or black pants 3. A tall boot.
