STYLE GURU STYLE: Boyfriend Not Required

Designers like Michael Kors, Stella McCartney and Frida Giannini for Gucci adorned the 2015 runways across the globe. My favorite part was that there was denim from the runways in New York, to Milan and Paris across the pond. Designers took jeans to a whole other level, bringing new and reinventing old ways to style them for spring and summer.

I believe that jeans can be worn to almost any occasion if worn with the right pieces. Jegging’s are comfortable, and skinnies make our legs look slimmer by giving the appearance of longer and leaner legs, but sometimes a relaxed pair of jeans is all we need. This is where the boyfriend jean comes in. You can still wear them with a slimmer inseam or wider leg if you prefer. They can be distressed to add more attitude to your outfit or with patches for a playful look.

I decided to go for a casual ensemble with a floral print, and neon/metallic pops of color. Pairing the 501CT tapered boyfriend-styled jean with a printed crop top and BCBG sandals to achieve a fun summer look along with an Express wristlet perfect for carrying only the essentials. I took inspiration from fellow denim lover Frida Giannini’s line for Gucci. She brought about a mix of light-denim washes back with her relaxed jeans, paired with various prints, vibrant colors and kicking it back to a 1970s vibe.

Women started this trend by borrowing their boyfriend’s jeans back in the day but the “boyfriend” part hasn’t been a requirement for ages. So no need to overthink the name, you can just call them a relaxed fit, as well. Besides, why borrow them from a guy when you can get you own fresh pair?

Personally, I didn’t get mine from a guy, but I did decide to grab a pair from the gentleman’s line of  501CT’s simply because they fit my curves better. Since this Levi’s denim line came out this year, the guys seemed to have had the best color range at that time. Needless to say they gave me what I felt a true boyfriend jean should look like: baggy, distressed and fun. Don’t be afraid to try on men’s jeans to achieve this look. After all, that’s where it all began. Some things in history truly do just keep repeating themselves, and the fashion trends are included. If designers, celebrities and fashion icons can rock these jeans, so can you!

Get My Look: 1. Boyfriend jeans. 2. A printed top. 3. Fun shoes (psst..metallics, prints, and straps are all the rave this summer).
