STYLE GURU STYLE: Bomber Jackets

When you’re on a college budget, it’s especially hard to transform your entire closet season by season, based off overarching runway trends that are bound to change again and again. It’s much easier to just pick one or two key things from your favorite collections. This season, bomber jackets stood out to me as a major trend piece, transforming into different styles—like military, feminine or sporty—and materials—including classic nylons, but also beautiful silks and cool leathers. While bomber jackets appeared on several runways, my personal favorite looks were the floral printed bomber jackets like those seen at Versus Versace. The show left me drooling over the contrast between the beautiful details of the prints and the casual coolness of the jackets’ cut, but I especially loved the matchy-matchy approach to the outfits’ styling.
What I appreciate most about specific trend pieces that come into fashion, such as bomber jackets, is that they are so much easier to mix in with other street style it-items without requiring a total wardrobe makeover. I styled this bomber jacket with two of my other favorite must-haves: my prized Stan Smith sneakers and a pair of frayed jeans. Inspired by the super coordinated looks at Versus Versace, I also decided to keep all the pieces within the same color scheme, so they complimented each other, rather than competed. With this neutral background, I felt like I could add more playful accessories, like reflective sunglasses and a fluffy keychain on my pink purse.
Though styled, my look is simple enough for class, errands around town or lunch with friends—definitely a casual approach to Versus Versace’s black on black and amped up sex appeal. However, choosing similar pieces in richer colors and fabrics, like silk and leather, would create a more going-out look for this outfit formula. This just goes to show how much variety bomber jackets can offer, and to be honest, I have a feeling I’ll be stocking up on a few versions this season!
