STYLE GURU STYLE: Bold and Broad

Broad shoulders are definitely a tough look to pull off. In the ’80s, shoulder pads were the trend. If you knew fashion in the ’80s, I am sure you owned a pair of shoulder pads or a piece with them built in. Shoulder pads themselves aren’t so much seen today, but the oversized, pronounced shoulder look is totally in.

As I was browsing the fall 2014 couture fashion show, I came across the Schiaparelli collection. The collection was filled with this pronounced look. It featured coats, jackets and dresses with big wide shoulders, which gave me some inspiration. One specific look reminded me of a coat I have that I have always wanted to wear.

I pulled out of my closet a multicolor, oversized fur coat from Urban Outfitters. The coat is not as pronounced as some in the collection, but it definitely has some ’80s flare. This coat is a statement piece and does not leave you unnoticed. I took the risk and paired this coat with simple black leggings and a black sweater. I figured since the coat is so bright and overwhelming, black was the perfect choice for underneath. I completed my outfit with a pair of classic black knee-high boots.

After taking just one glance at this collection, I fell in love. Bringing back trends is one of my favorite things about fashion. You may look back and see pictures of your mother in some crazy outfit and then all of the sudden you are wearing it! The Schiaparelli collection inspired me to try out this daring look.

Get My Look: 1. An oversized jacket. 2. Black sweater. 3. Classic boots.
