STYLE GURU STYLE: Bohemian Elements

As I’ve mentioned before, fashion is a very personal form of self-expression. In the past, I’ve tried to pinpoint exactly what it is that I resonate most with when it comes to my personal style. But I’ve found that it’s really hard to identify with just one specific style because my wardrobe doesn’t always fit easily into one category. Honestly, most of the time you’ll catch me wearing leggings and Nikes. I know for a fact, however, that I love anything bohemian; I have a weakness for romantic silhouettes and whimsical textiles. I’m pretty sure it all started when my parents first introduced me to Fleetwood Mac as a little kid. Ever since, Stevie Nicks has been one of my style icons.

Ulla Johnson’s spring 2015 collection was glamorously bohemian. Inspired by a recent trip to Morocco, the series was filled with wide-legged pants, fringed sweaters and airy dresses. To recreate a look similar to Johnson’s collection, I paired my ribbed black crop top with my orange maxi skirt. Although Johnson’s collection consisted mainly of a neutral palette with pops of blue, I decided to opt for a warmer color. I don’t usually wear a lot of color, but when I saw this skirt I knew I had to have it. I really like its boho print, and I think it’ll be a great piece for spring and summer.

For shoes, I decided to pull out the Birkenstocks. When Birkenstocks blew up as a trend, I was kind of confused; I had no idea that there were people in the world who hadn’t worn them their entire lives. In Lawrence, Birkenstocks are a way of life and people wear them whenever, no matter the season (you’ll catch some townies rocking their Birks with some wool socks during the winter). I love my Birks to death; they’re worn, torn and the bottoms are melted because of that one summer when I left them in my car after a trip to the lake. They’re my favorite slip-on shoe and I felt that they were an effortless addition to the look.

For accessories, I chose to wear an assortment of bracelets and a milky blue cocktail ring, both of which complemented my statement necklace. This necklace is one of my favorite pieces of jewelry. I really like its design and color. It’s really unique piece, and I got it on clearance at Urban Outfitters. It’s one of my proudest bargain shopping pieces to date. Of course, I chose to wear my dusty gold sequined clutch for additional texture, but I wore it over my shoulder for a more casual look. This is my go-to bag for any occasion if I really can’t decide on what purse to wear.

Get My Look: 1. A boho-print maxi skirt. 2. A knit tank top. 3. Birkenstock sandals.
