Mom jeans, boyfriend jeans—whatever you call them, the classic blue jean is getting a face lift in the fashion world, and I knew just who to go to for the perfect and modern blue denim. Rachel Comey’s 2015 resort show was the place to see what I refer to as: the 12 shades of blue collection.
Comey actually debuted her first denim collection a couple seasons ago, but this season she wanted to spice things up a bit. She stopped at nothing to fine the richest indigo and stone-washed dyes for her work, and it definitely shows.
In my day-to-day style, I tend to stay away from bright colors. Naturally, I was drawn to this collection because of its lack of bright pinks and yellows, but I was also attracted to three other elements. First things first, the richness of Comey’s selection is to die for! The variation of shades from light to dark blue are crisp and clean. Secondly, the high-waisted mom/boyfriend jeans. High-waisted jean shorts have been trending for a while, as well as, skinny jeans, but high-waisted loose-fitting jeans are pushing themselves into the mainstream fashion world (I’m kind of loving it). The last thing that attracted me to this collection was the sexiness of it all. To many, blues (especially dark blues) are considered a manly color. I appreciate how Comey feminized the collection, while still keeping its strength.
As you all know, staying cute and comfortable is a fashion motto that I live by. As I was styling this outfit, I knew I had to stay true to it. I also wanted to test the waters, and see if I could match two different shades of blue. Even though monochromic ensembles are a popular summer trend, I still question the use of denim on denim. Did it fade out when Brittney Spears and Justin Timberlake matched in 2001?
Well, of course I had to try it, and immediately I fell in love. I didn’t quiet conquer the monochromic look, but I believe this is one step closer to its success. For the pairing of denim, my clue for wearing blue is: it’s all about the shade. Dare to be different and pair a lighter wash of denim with a darker one. Embrace the weather summer has to offer, and don’t be scared to be a little sexy.
