STYLE GURU STYLE: Black—The New Orange

I feel most comfortable and more myself when I wear darker clothing; I feel out of place when I wear extremely bright and bold colors. Though I have been working hard to relax into the brights that come with the spring season, it’s hard. Comfort zones hold me back and I’m not proud of it. So it’s a slow start for me, but that’s okay. I’m not ready to plunge into completely new territory. When I first encountered the Saint Laurent spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection, I felt it the perfect opportunity to apply some color to my everyday look.

This collection featured an array of leathered darker toned pieces with the occasional pop of color with shoes, vests, fur coats—a collection centered around idealism of the early ’70s, with looks completely enamored by bold prints, perfectly accompanying the lavish dark leather.

Thus, I pulled simple basics from my closet. A ribbed black T-shirt I picked up from the thrift store a few months back seemed like a perfect fit. I decided to pair it with a navy school girl skirt and couldn’t possibly think of completing the look without some black opaque tights. The color comes from the bright orange leather backpack. It’s such an attention grabber; I could be noticed from a mile away with this accessory slung over my shoulder. With such a strong piece, my outfit tended toward a simple layout. I didn’t want to overwhelm myself in picking out equally bright complements. I ended the look with a pair of gold hoop earrings because my accessories were lacking and this pair has been my recent favorite.

Next time you’re lacking in color and are afraid to go so bold, try it with a simple accessory! It’s a good start for those who, like myself, are afraid of such strong colors.

Get My Look: 1. School skirt. 2. Gold hoop earrings. 3. Orange backpack.
