STYLE GURU STYLE: Black Is The New Black

Alexander Wang’s recent runway show gave new life to the classic black trend. Embracing the power of an all-black ensemble, Wang perfected a young and edgy tribute to the timeless look. The idea behind Wang’s collection was to give the customers what they desire: black. His chic and structured looks redefine the nature of black, expressing it in a more lively and desirable way. The collection was constructed with a variety of materials including leather, velvet and silk. Through the combination of these different materials with accents of studs and fringe, each piece was made distinctive and appealing.

This runway trend is definitely one that I can relate to. With new ideas from Wang’s show, I decided to restructure my typical all-black ensemble. The top that I am wearing includes a combination of varying details and materials, influenced by Wang’s use of many different materials throughout his show. These combinations ultimately work to improve the strength and impact of the all-black look. The contrasting material between the coarse body of the shirt and the mesh sleeves give the shirt a more dynamic nature. The free-flowing sleeves work to complement the structured body. This definition is further emphasized through the studs that line the seam between the body and the sleeve. This embellishment reflects the studs used by Wang on many of his looks in order to add greater interest and edge to the pieces. Paired with a simple pair of black jeans, the structure and detail of this unique blouse worked to define the look. To finalize my ensemble, I interpreted Wang’s use of chunky shoes into a thick heel. The cutouts on the shoe, as well as the thickness of the heel, contribute to the edgy feel and complete the look.

This fall 2015 ready-to-wear line effectively proved that all-black would continue to stand as an everlasting trend. Wang’s strict attention to detail along with his youthful standpoint created a line that is unique and attention grabbing—one that I will definitely use as inspiration in the future.

Get My Look: 1. A dynamic black blouse. 2. A sleek pair of black skinny jeans. 3. An edgy black heeled bootie.
