STYLE GURU STYLE: Black is the New Black

As someone who lives for neutrals, I find myself gravitating towards black and only black, discovering the true meaning of “all-black everything.” (Pro tip: not all blacks match, sadly) This results in me looking for different ways to express my myself. One way to create depth in a fairly monochromatic outfit is to feature texture.

On runways around the world this past season, mixed textiles have dominated the fashion scene. In particular, Prada’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection highlights the mixed medias suede and leather.

To make this trend my own, I picked out a piece inspired from Prada’s show. I styled a black cardigan with a mixed media drape lapel. The juxtaposition of the suede and leather on either side of the lapel makes any outfit more interesting. I also paired the cardigan with a black wrap tank top, ripped light wash jeans, clear bag (super trendy!) and black booties. I am able to maintain a classically feminine look with a hint of edge.

Mixed medias are perfect for Fashionistas/os who like to bounce between styles. It provides pieces that incorporate multiple styles, allowing others to more truly express themselves. For example, this cardigan pulls from two different styles, reconciling them into one unique garment.

So keep in mind this spring when you are out shopping, if bright colors and florals are not your scene, black (and neutrals in general) are timeless and there always a new way to spice up your outfit. Just remember, “Those who wear all-black have the most colorful minds.”
