STYLE GURU STYLE: Beat The Heat

Summer is a time when all of the effortless, breezy looks come out to play. Off-the-shoulder tops and flowing skirts show up everywhere you turn, baring sun-kissed shoulders and hard-earned tans. Yet while summer may seem like a time when it’s all fun and games, we college interns know that is far from the truth. While many of our lucky friends are spending their time at beaches and barbecues, we are dedicating our time to long hours at the office—where shoulder-baring shirts unfortunately have no place. Though temperatures may be blazing outside, we have to maintain at least a semblance of professionalism in our respective workplaces.

While it may be difficult to dress appropriately when the temperature is a humid 97 degrees, a little inspiration can go a long way when finding an outfit for the office. This week, my inspiration came in the form of the Creatures of Comfort resort 2016 collection. The show lived up its brand name, featuring loose, boxy silhouettes and an array of denim pieces for maximum comfort. Styles such as bell-bottoms, dresses over pants and jumpers were scattered throughout, giving the show a trendy and relevant feel. Classic styles were effortlessly mixed in throughout the trends, making the clothes a perfect twist on the office look. And while fun accessories and a few bright colors were thrown into the mix, the all-white looks seemed to me to be the true looks of summer.

With such a perfect collection as inspiration, recreating the Creatures of Comfort look for myself was as easy as it was fun. Playing on the undone denim trend, I chose a frayed jean midi skirt as the focal piece of my outfit. The collection had just the right amount of weird, so I chose a funky sideways button down shirt to pair with it. Because it was one of the hottest days of the year, I stuck with the all-white theme of the show, pairing similar but different shades on top of each other. To accessorize, I kept it simple—a perfect pair of summer sandals and a classic handbag finished my look while making it even more office-friendly.

There is nothing I dread more in the summer than walking outside only to melt into a puddle of hot black clothing before I even make it to work. Thankfully, the Creatures of Comfort collection served as the perfect inspiration to avoid succumbing to hot office clothing. While I may not be able to wear breezy day dresses every day of summer, I can at least bear the heat and still look kind of cute, too.

Get My Look: 1. A funky top. 2. A denim skirt. 3. The best summer sandals.
