Mara Hoffman described her spring 2014 ready-to-wear runway show as being about “straight-up happiness”. And happy is exactly how I felt while looking at her collection. Each look is vibrant, fun and completely encapsulates the joy of summer vacation. I can honestly say that I would wear every single one of the outfits in her collection. However, she created a number of brightly colored, printed maxi dresses that I especially loved. Many of the patterns had both tribal and geometric influences and incorporated a variety of colors, making them stand out among a few simpler pieces.

Mara Hoffman’s use of color and print shined in the spring runway shows when compared to the popular monochrome and metallic trends. While I’ve been inspired by these trends in my last few posts, Hoffman’s line encouraged me to be bold and to try something different.

Using this collection as inspiration, I created my own similar look to wear on a beautiful summer day. I chose a vibrant, geometric patterned maxi dress to make a statement. My 5-foot-2 stature can sometimes make it hard to find the perfect maxi dress but miraculously, this one fit without hemming. For all you petite girls out there who understand this problem, don’t let long hemlines or fear of looking too short keep you from trying maxis! Long dresses come in all sizes and lengths; you just have to find the right one. I made sure to choose a dress that didn’t have excessive fabric and that was fitted under the bust to keep the look flattering.

Because the dress was the main attraction of the outfit, I kept the rest of the look simple. For a beachy, hippie aesthetic, I wore a straw hat with a black band around the outside and flat strappy sandals. To incorporate a bit of the tribal inspiration seen in Hoffman’s runway show, I added a pendant elephant necklace and a black beaded bracelet. Even though this necklace was vintage, I’ve seen elephant jewelry and patterns everywhere this spring, and they’re quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

Just like Mara Hoffman’s spring ready-to-wear collection, this outfit is perfect for summer vacation. Whether you’re going to the beach, shopping, to a barbecue or out to lunch, a patterned maxi dress is a simple, yet attention-grabbing trend.
