STYLE GURU STYLE: Basic Contrast is a Blast

In the midst of emerging artsy fashion and its pattern frenzy, lets not forget about the basics! By focusing on color, your basic garments can also achieve awesome contrast. This concept was evident in alice + olivia resort 2015 line.

Upon viewing the line, I was inspired by the color combinations of a particularly interesting dress. It was composed of a print that literally seemed drawn on the garment using the colors orange, black, white, yellow and blue. As the first look on display, it set the tone for the subsequent looks. alice + olivia focused on contrast not only with their unique, fun prints but also with pairing of bold colors with neutral/cool colors.

After absorbing all components of this dress, I sought to imitate some of its elements but casual style for a very hot afternoon. Therefore, the outfit not only had to appear stylish but functional for 90 degree weather, yikes! As a firm believer that an outfit can be bold and simplistic simultaneously, I sought after the basics. My basics for the summer include an array of crop tops with interesting necklines resembling ’90s fashion. I figured I could pair one of these tops with a nice fitting pair of shorts. Imitating the black and white print and garment combinations throughout alice + olivia’s line, I grabbed a racerback black and white crop top and a black short. I liked the look but it was too plain. It needed some pop!

Immediately I thought, “heels make everything better, right?” Of course! I searched through my shoe collection for a heel that would bring the look to life. I ran across my scarlet sandaled heel I bought years ago at Forever 21. The sandaled heel served as a perfect accent to the black and white ensemble. I applied a shimmer peach gloss to my lips, put my favorite sunglasses on, and was officially prepared for the heat!

Get My Look:  1. Fitted black shorts. 2. Contrast trim racerback tank top. 3. Heeled sandals.
