Ever since I can remember, I’ve had extraordinarily long hair. Born with a birthmark just below my neck, I grew up self-conscious about my back. I hid behind my hair until the age of 12 when I underwent surgery to have the birthmark removed. Due to complications, the surgery left a major scar in its place, and I found myself right back at square one.
While scouring Style.com for the perfect runway trend to cover for my last article of the semester, I came upon Topshop Unique’s spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection. Right off the bat, the bold colors and prints, strappy dresses and slightly oversized silhouettes captured my attention. Upon further inspection, however, I noticed the acres of bare back displayed by the models on their descent from the runway. I knew right then and there that this key component to the collection would be the deal breaker for me.
That was the case until I discovered this backless jumpsuit while casually shopping at a local Urban Outfitters. For some, the jumpsuit might seem like an intimidating trend to try. For me, it was going backless.
I ventured into the dressing room telling myself to just give it a try. I shut my eyes and slid into the jumpsuit with high hopes. Before my eyes even opened, I knew what the outcome was going to be. The soft fabric hugged my body in all the right places and, despite my insecurities, exposed my back beautifully. I felt so free; I practically danced out of the store that day. I couldn’t wait to get home to write my article on Topshop Unique’s show.
Although beautiful prints and pops of blue and yellow dotted the runway, this ensemble channeled some of the simpler looks throughout the show and, of course, highlighted a bare back. The models wore sandals similar to the ones I chose, featuring a covered foot and peep toe. Look 29 revealed a large, solo hoop earring and chic arm cuff as bold accessories. Following this lead, I incorporated a black and gold necklace and arm cuff as statement jewelry of my own.
Fashion is a method of expression and inspiration. I took a chance on this look and appreciate Topshop Unique for inspiring me step out of my comfort zone. Who knows what I’ll try next, there are no limitations!
