STYLE GURU STYLE: Back to Black

Having lived in the New York City area most of my life, simplicity has always been my style motto. The no-fuss, no-drama style of New Yorkers represents an effortless, Kate Moss type of chic many strive to achieve. That being said, black is the color I am most drawn to. It is universally the most flattering color and can be worn all four seasons. Just because the summer heat is upon us doesn’t mean we have to rule out an all black outfit. It’s a matter of balancing lightweight fabrics, simple but impactful accessories and a trendy pair of shades.

Inspired by the simple lines of Akira’s resort 2017 collection, I have put together an outfit that is both functional and fashionable for the unbearable NYC humidity. Most of the collection included flowey fabrics, lightweight blouses and the use of summer neutrals to create a cohesive and practical look.

Using the same type of color palette as Akira’s collection, I choose a lightweight black dress and paired it with statement metallic sandals. A gray purse is the perfect complement to the monochromatic vibe of this look. The key to this outfit was using a simple black dress as a blank canvas and using simple accessories to dress up the look. My favorite part of the look was the layered choker/necklace set. Adding this necklace complemented the halter neckline of the dress as well giving the outfit interest.

Akira’s collection truly exemplified resort wear with toned neutrals, breezy fabrics and comfortable footwear. The collection translates very well for those hot, humid summer nights where all you want to do is stay cool. While the collection had minimal to no jewelry present, I decided to add my own personal touch by using layered necklaces but still maintaining the simplistic style Akira embodies. Although being a New Yorker in the August heat may not always be ideal, a simple and breathable outfit like this helps to combat the heatwave.
