STYLE GURU STYLE: Art Class Hero

Style Guru Style

The spring 2014 ready-to-wear fashion show by Prada was artfully delicious. Miuccia Prada has injected an influence of politically charged art into her most recent collection. The core design scheme echoed that of L.A. and South American street art consisting of a number of pieces decorated with large murals and art inspired prints. The street element gave a hugely sporty flare to all the looks by adding things like tube socks and outer coats to each outfit. The bright, bold and sophisticated dresses paired with matching knee-highs created a trendy yet casual collection of looks. From the fun accessories to the unique color blocking, these striking outfits are a whole new way to look at clothing.

I personally love the idea of combining influences from artists with your own artistic flair to create a one of a kind outfit. So with that in mind I took a step back into art class and created my very own wearable modern art. I took a cool toned approach to Prada’s look 25.

I started with a fun geometrical print bodycon dress. This long sleeved purple and blue number is form fitting and usually lends itself to a night out, but I chose to dress it down for the daytime. The modern art flare mirrors that of Prada’s concept but with a bit of a sexier fit. I love a bright print like this because it’s just as striking as Prada’s mural dresses but a little more causal (and not to mention flattering). The Prada look paired a boxy, bright purse to match the boxy and bright dress, so to emulate the look I chose a petite and flashy purple clutch to match my petite and flashy dress.

Next I chose to incorporate the sporty aspect. Instead of tube socks with a matching trim I chose a similar height sock with a black and white print to complement my dress. As for shoes, while Prada chose a sandal I played up the casual idea by rocking a pair of classic white sneakers. From there I threw on my own addition of a sweatshirt vest to tie it all together and add a top layer for comfort.

Overall I think the concept of pairing fun socks with an even more fun art-pop dress is a brilliant idea. For a Fashionista like me who gets bored easily with her wardrobe, a bold statement combination like this is just what I needed to change up my style.

So next time you want a taste of gym class with an artsy flare, look to Prada for inspiration and give it the old college try!
