STYLE GURU STYLE: All Dolled Up

In the Moschino spring 2017 ready-to-wear collection, Jeremy Scott brought a two-dimensional icon to the thee-dimensional space with his resurrection of the paper doll.

Like everything Jeremy Scott touches, the collection was animated and evocative of a different time period. Already, Jeremy Scott has created Barbie-inspired collections for Moschino, specifically with his spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection. Perhaps, he decided it would be appropriate to give homage to her ancestor, the paper doll.

The first Barbie did not hit stores until 1959, so the ’50s inspired hair and makeup made perfect sense for representing the paper doll before the end of her prime. Stiff A-line hems mimicked the rigid behavior of paper. In true Jeremy Scott fashion, white folding tabs attached to the backs of the looks showed a literal interpretation of his muse.

While I will pass on the white folding tabs, for now, I truly adored how Scott maximized the drama in each silhouette to give it his signature playful mood.

My outfit inspiration came largely from this look. I loved how the contrast between the fitted bodice and the stiff circle skirt animated the classic A-line cut. Because the silhouette was the key ingredient to the charm of this look, I wore a white A-line dress with a similar shape. I belted it at the waist to achieve a sharper contrast between the fitted top and the flared skirt. While I didn’t have one of the enviable paper hats from the runway for an accessory, I sprinkled in a touch of novelty with a purse that resembles a 1950s telephone.
