STYLE GURU STYLE: A(lace) In Wonderland

Style Guru Style

All puns aside, the alice + olivia fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection was right up my alley. It featured deep colors, mixed textures and patterns and lots of interesting fabrics. Everything about this collection is so stimulating to the senses and when I first saw it, all I wanted to do was touch the luxurious fabrics of every piece. Furthermore (as if that weren’t already enough to win my heart), any line that incorporates a floor-length velvet coat, I’m all for. The combination of the three very distinct fabrics in this particular look — lace, velvet and denim — creates a lot of visual interest. These eye-catching combinations are something I wanted to incorporate into my own casual, street style look.

Since I do not own a floor-length velvet duster (though I do have my eye on this one from Saltwater Gypsy) I improvised with an oversized flannel. I love the length and rough edge on this shirt, and the addition of gingham lining sets it apart from your typical plaid shirt. The two patterns also create another dimension of visual interest á la alice + olivia.

I decided to pair this lace crop top with high-waisted denim shorts. I know that high-waisted shorts have been the butt (both literally and figuratively) of many mom-jeans and grandma jokes recently, but I still love how they look on just about everyone. This pair that I made from jeans found at Goodwill are one of my favorite items in my closet. I wear them with everything, and I have definitely gotten more than my money’s worth out of them. If you want this look, I highly suggest making your own cut-off shorts out of a thrifted pair of jeans. It’s so easy and such a steal!

Finally, I threw on my favorite pair of motorcycle boots. I am such a fan of boots for summer. This pair gives the outfit just the bit of edge that I wanted and harkens back to the studded leather belt in the runway look.

Get My Look: 1. An oversized shirt or long plaid jacket. 2. A dainty lace crop top. 3. DIY high-waisted denim shorts made from a cheap pair of jeans found at your local second-hand store. Happy hunting!
