STYLE GURU STYLE: Acid-Washed Dreams

The idea of “acid-washed” clothing might freak some of us out right off the bat. We might think of the ever popular style in the mid ’80s and think of how quickly it faded out by the mid ’90s. Although it’s sometimes intimidating to bring back old trends, it’s always possible and even better if you add in your own personal twist. I got the inspiration for my outfit from the kate spade new york fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. The outfits in this line are all unique in their own way, but they all share a spunky and vibrant quality. The collection mixes together a retro yet whimsical vibe and creates a perfect balance between the two. I wanted to mix a masculine and feminine look together but in a sort of vintage way. Although “masculine” isn’t normally a word that comes to mind when one thinks of kate spade, I thought I’d give it a whirl.

I decided to do a double whammy of acid-washed items with both a baseball cap and backpack. The idea of not one but two acid-washed items may make some people shield their eyes and envision an outdated rock group, but if done correctly, I think it’s possible to make it cool and trendy. I paired these items with a subtle white knitted sweater and black jeans so that it wasn’t overwhelming or clashing with the rest of my outfit. I also went for a pair of gray Dr. Martens to keep consistent with the neutral colors and to give it more of the masculine feel.

However, to add another aspect of kate spade’s collection into my look, I chose an army green jacket with oversized pockets. The coats in the collection all stand out because they all have such bold and distinct qualities. Whether it be large pockets, interesting cuts or huge buttons, the jackets are all made beautifully and in no way seem cookie cutter-esque. This line has inspired me to wear statement pieces and to pair things even if you aren’t always confident they’ll work together. It’s always better to be a little risky and try something new than to stick with the same old thing!

Get My Look: 1. A rocking hat. 2. Some killer Dr. Martens. 3. A statement jacket.
