“If you were stranded on a desert island and could only pick one fashion line to wear, which would you pick?”
I doubt anyone will ever ask me this, but if they do, I would say Nicole Miller’s pre-fall 2014 collection in a heartbeat. I like to describe my own style as boho-chic, and that’s the exact vibe the clothing from this line has. Like a true ’90s girl, I was drawn to the line’s mesh crop tops, feathered slip dresses and tasseled sweaters. These were paired with some of my modern favorites, like maxi skirts and kimonos in a mixed plaid and floral print. Plaid and floral are two patterns that you’d think would clash, but Nicole Miller pulled them together perfectly. Unexpected twists like this made the relaxed, draping pieces also feel bold and exciting.
I had the opportunity to pretend my dream was a reality recently when Chicago got some (rare) hot and humid weather. Kimonos are a hot weather must-have because they cover you up, but are light and breezy enough to keep you cool. I channeled Nicole Miller’s collection with a blue kimono dotted with bright flowers. I paired it with a tan romper that was close to my skin tone to make my kimono really stand out. One of my favorite parts of the bohemian-chic style is the ability to express yourself with random and possibly clashing accessories, like Miller did with the plaid and floral combination in her line. I accessorized with a long, bedazzled pendant, a pair of sparkly jelly sandals and a couple of elephant rings. Dark red lips and matching nails added some chicness to my bohemian look that helped me stay cool in my pretend desert island of Chicago.
You cannot beat a sheer kimono on a humid day. Add a red lip and accessories that show off your personality to create an outfit that’s as uniquely boho-chic as Nicole Miller’s pre-fall 2014 collection.
