STYLE GURU PICKS—Summer Trends

Let’s be real: summer is not always as pleasant as we imagine. We forget about the immense amount of sweat, unbearable heat and sunburn—none of which are enjoyable to deal with in any way. In an effort to make the most of these, well, downsides of the much anticipated season (especially after this seriously weird spring), let’s focus on things we can help: our outfits. I mean, it’s important to look good in the inevitable Instagram shot of you eating ice cream or standing next to the ocean.

Let’s see what some of our Style Gurus are looking forward to sporting this hot season!

1. Prairie Dress

Sara Tredway

Prairie dresses are going to be huge this summer season, and I am so thrilled! This dress style encompasses my personal style, and I believe that it can be worn in a variety of different settings! I think the rustic and breezy vibes the prairie dress gives off are perfect for the summer months!”- Sara Tredway, Southern Illinois University Carbondale

2. Crochet Off-the-shoulder Top

Nilla Austin

An off-the-shoulder top is the perfect combination of classy and sexy. Showing off a bit of skin is what the summer is all about. For women who may be bit more on the modest side, this look shows off just the right amount with a girly vibe.”- Nilla Austin, Middle Tennessee State University

3. Espadrilles

Sheeva Izadi

It’s so important to have cute and versatile shoes for the summer. This pair of gladiator platform espadrilles give that versatility while staying comfortable and stylish.”- Sheeva Izadi, Eastern Illinois University

4. Round Sunglasses

Julianna Paul

Round sunglasses are the perfect approach to dealing with the summer sun in style. They can make even the simplest looks become edgy and bold.”- Julianna Paul, University of Southern California

5. Embroidered Cap

Nicholas Sullivan

Embroidered caps add an effortless statement to your outfit.”- Nicholas Sullivan, Washtenaw Community College

6. Plain Off-the-shoulder Top

Ashley Martin

One of my favorite trends for this summer is off-the-shoulder tops and dresses because they can easily be dressed up and down and they create a great open space for a statement necklace or long earrings.”- Ashley Martin, Columbia College Chicago

7. Denim Mini Skirt

Gabrielle Scherer

Denim mini skirts are back, and unique patchwork of this trend is amazing!”- Gabrielle Scherer, Bloomsburg University

8. Slip Dress

Halle Olson

Slip dresses are a great item for summer because they’re chic and lightweight. You’re still able to look great and not be super hot during the day.”- Halle Olson, North Central College

9. Bodysuit

Alissa Virgil

I believe bodysuits are going to be the next big thing! They are so great because they typically fit you nice and tight like a second skin. You don’t have to worry about tucking in a shirt and having those weird lines showing either. Bodysuits are offered in a variety of styles, I’ve seen many of them with the popular lace-up trend. This bodysuit is a long sleeve; however its low back and front provide some breathing room for those hot summer days. It can be paired with a variety of bottoms such as shorts, skirts and jeans.”- Alissa Virgil, University of Arkansas
