“Whatever you want to do, if you want to be great at it, you have to love it and be able to make sacrifices for it.”—Maya Angelou. This may have been one of the most valuable things I have learned throughout my college experience. When it comes to picking our majors, participating in activities and internships and applying for jobs, the most important factor is that we are choosing to do things that we love, because that is what will set us up for success. As Maya Angelou also said, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it.” I am a firm believer that regardless of where you come from or where you are, you can create the life you want to live by staying true to yourself and working hard to accomplish your goals. With that being said, I am Victoria Pickens: a fashion student, dream chaser and Style Guru.
This will be my third semester on the CollegeFashionista team and I can honestly say that my experience thus far has been amazing! I have gained so much more confidence with communicating, writing, editing and identifying how runway trends relate to street style through this internship and I am looking forward to improving and learning more this summer.
Taking journalism courses for fun and writing freelance articles for a new teen magazine, Sesi, has solidified my interest in fashion and lifestyle journalism. Writing has become something I do naturally, so if I could make a career out of it, it probably wouldn’t even feel like a “job” to me. I am currently the Blog Editor for Philadelphia University’s student run fashion publication, Style Line, as well as the Editor-in-Chief of a new online magazine launching this July, Darla Magazine, and I absolutely love it! I enjoy working with such eclectic teams of writers and combining our individual interests and styles to create new stories.
My interests, from music to astrology, are often reflected in my style. I enjoy wearing things that aren’t supposed to go together, like a menswear inspired T-shirt with a feminine skirt, or eccentric outfits that I can wear with either Nike Air Jordan sneakers or pumps. I have a collection of Married to the MOB apparel and I spend every Fashion Week obsessing over new Balmain, Chanel and alice + olivia collections. I admire all aspects of fashion, from high end designers, to the underground street wear brands I discover on Instagram.
I anticipate on having a relatively busy summer filled with taking courses, working and trying to take over the world, but I know my Style Guru tasks will be the best things on my to-do list! For the next three months, I will be style-stalking the Fashionistas/os of Philadelphia to include in my weekly articles that will give you suggestions on WHAT TO WEAR for specific occasions (you can thank me later).
