There is no place in the world like Manhattan with its glittering lights, constant rush of mustard-yellow taxis and streamlined skyscraping architecture. In all its metropolitan glory, New York also embodies a place rich with diverse art, music, food and, of course, fashion. I am fortunate enough to not only live in this concrete jungle, but also to attend New York University, located right in the heart of bustling downtown. My name is Victoria Ontman, and I am thrilled to be joining CollegeFashionista this spring semester as a Style Guru for NYU.
As a sophomore, by now I’ve certainly noticed how daring and varied my school’s student population is when it comes to dressing itself. On any given day, a passerby is likely to observe quite literally anything ranging from the classic collared shirt and tie to the more relaxed oversized sweater and graphic leggings. New York kids go all out when it comes to filling their wardrobes and certainly aren’t afraid to take risks.
In terms of my personal style, I possess a penchant for anything polished and uber-feminine, whether it’s a gorgeous color-blocked, pleated BCBG skirt or a pair of black Dior cateyes reminiscent of the 1960s. Although I am a college student and splurging doesn’t happen often, I try to look for quality pieces embellished with luxe detailing that will last for a long time. Anything Audrey Hepburn ever wore was perfection, and I would kill for a chance to peruse the closets of Olivia Palermo, Margherita Missoni and Blake Lively. Always chic and refined, they also manage to look put together while blending ladylike elements with eclectic accessories or statement pieces.
In New York, and in college, you can be whoever you want to be and truly experiment until you find yourself and what fits you the best. With that in mind, I can’t wait to scout out NYU’s best-dressed and draw inspiration from them!
