STYLE GURU BIO: Vanessa Salerno

Hey there, my name is Vanessa Salerno and I’m a freshman at SUNY Oneonta studying fashion merchandise. I plan on participating in my schools 3+1 program with FIT, so I will graduate in four years from Oneonta and FIT, with two degrees. I’m from a small town in upstate New York, but I’ve always known that I belong in New York City. This is my first semester writing for CollegeFashionista and I’m super excited to see what this semester has in store! Ever since I was little I’ve always had a passion for fashion, and recently I’ve discovered a love for photography and writing as well, which prompted me to launch my own blog earlier this year. I’m not sure what I want to do specifically with fashion, but I want to do it all.

What I love most about fashion is that there are no rules. It’s simple—if you like something, wear it. You know the expression, a pictures worth a thousand words? Well it works the same way with clothing. When it comes to fashion and style, clothes can sometimes express how you’re feeling and tell a story better than words can, and can give you a confidence that you might not have otherwise. There’s no limit on what you can wear and how you wear it, or even if you’re following trends. As much as I like following trends, I love mixing together different pieces and seeing what works, even if it doesn’t. Because fashion is always changing, I love that it gives me the ability to change up my look and style whenever, so I don’t have one style or look necessarily—I’ll literally wear whatever. I have Iris Apfel to thank for that, she’s my style inspiration.

For this look, I’m wearing basic black skinny jeans and a collared wrap-front blouse from my favorite store, Urban Outfitters. Since it’s winter, I wore my latest obsession, a gray wool coat. I finished off this look with a pair of Chelsea rain boots, a hat, gold plated choker and a pair of cool clear glasses. (They look really expensive, but they were from the dollar store!) This is definitely a more urban/city look for me, but I love it!

I hope you love this look as much as I do. As Marc Jacobs said, “Let’s do what we love, and do a lot of it.”
