My name is Tuty Ballestas and I am a junior at the Savannah College of Art and Design pursuing a degree in Fashion Design and a minor in Marketing and Management. This will be my first time as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista and I couldn’t be more excited about it!
I was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, a city in South America full of life and home to the happiest and most welcoming people you’ll ever meet. At the age of 14 I moved to Houston, Texas, where I gained four years of unforgettable memories with friends who became like a family away from home. Always supported by my family’s love and encouragement, I graduated from high school and moved to Savannah, Georgia to follow my dreams of becoming a fashion designer. Last summer, I had the opportunity to study abroad in London, at Central St. Martins, where I learned about laser cutting techniques and using the latest software for fashion designers today. My family lives in Florida and I’m happy to call it my fourth home away from home. All of the places where I have lived have influenced who I am as a person and as a designer. I’ve had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, which has opened my eyes to many different cultures and ideas.
I like to define my personal style as edgy and sophisticated at the same time, yet sometimes it just really depends on my mood. I am crazy about prints and bold accessories to accentuate any outfit. I believe there is a very fine line between being bold and being tacky, and it’s all about finding the perfect balance of edge and elegance. I don’t think you need to fit into a specific stereotype to be stylish; it’s all about being confident in your own skin. I have a very positive outlook on life and I truly believe that no designer will ever dress a girl better than happiness does. I aspire to become a successful womenswear designer for a successful company, and to ultimately become the creative director of my own brand. I would love to design for strong, independent women who want to look sexy without being obvious about it.
This summer I will be part of the design team for a high-end women’s luxury brand in New York, where I will get first-hand experience of how the industry works. I am beyond thrilled to be reporting to CollegeFashionista from one of the most important cities for the fashion savvy around the world. This will be a very inspiring experience for me and I can’t wait for what this summer has in store!
