My name is Tala Odeh and I am a rising senior currently attending American University. I am pursuing a degree in public communication with a double minor in marketing and French. While I am in love with the small city of Washington D.C., my heart lies in my home city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. After growing up in a city that boasts an ever-growing fashion industry, I am naturally drawn to trends, style and design. So between my love for writing, my knowledge of social media and my eye for design, I am so excited to start as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista.
Growing up as a third culture kid, I have been blessed to travel, explore and live in different cities around the world. While every place is different and the people, customs and traditions vary, style is a common factor and I have found that it actually brings people together. Be it two women swooning over an amazing pair of shoes in Paris, or a business man complimenting his colleague’s cufflinks at a corporate party in Sydney, I have no doubt that no matter where people are, or what language they speak, a message about style never goes unheard. So what better place to find inspiration from and comment on fashion than a college campus?
While AU is known for political activism, it can also be known for glamour and grunge. While I came into college with the idea that Dubai’s unparalleled allure and elegance would be no match for Washington’s notorious reputation for hipster flair, I can now honestly say I was dead wrong. Attending American University led to a change in my style and finally I feel like I have struck a happy balance between what I knew to be glamorous and what I observed to be grunge.
This summer, as I hunt for American University’s best-dressed men, I hope to be inspired to give up my true addiction to the color black and embrace fresh tones and hues while the sun is shining and the men are chic. So without further ado, LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS at AU!
