STYLE GURU BIO: Sierra Cortner

Greetings from Music City, Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Sierra Cortner and I am currently on a much needed summer break from Emory University where I double major in English and International Studies.

Now that I have a break from Chaucerian literature and political analyses, I find myself in a state of reflection. Two years ago I sat in my parents’ living room during The Carrie Diaries’ reign with an issue of Teen Vogue in one hand and a carton of Vita Coco in the other. As a soon-to-be graduate who was easily influenced by the likes of Carrie Bradshaw, I secretly plotted adventures for my new conquest: Atlanta. After looking back, I realize that history has repeated itself. However, this time the BBC’s Miranda replaces The Carrie Diaries and I am skimming the newsfeed of Leandra Medine’s sartorial brainchild: The Man Repeller. The newest city of conquest? Oxford.

This summer I am grateful to travel to Oxford University with Emory’s study abroad program to take classes on Shakespearean literature and English play production with the director, Stephen Unwin. During my weekends off, I will have the opportunity to visit London and (fingers crossed) Paris and Madrid to style hunt. Although Atlanta harbors diverse style—urban chic meets Prince and the Revolution—I believe that Western Europe will provide me with a fresh change from the trends that characterize Atlanta.

Whether I am sporting a thrift shop find from Little Five Points’ Rag-o-Rama or my favorite silver brogues, I am a firm believer in mixing personality pieces with high-end purchases. Why wear all your brands at once? By doing this, the wearer creates a look all their own—one that cannot be purchased straight off the mannequin at Neiman Marcus. The outfit for this shoot consists of an oversized button-down that I scored during a recent thrifting spree, tortoise sunglasses, a color block dress, wedges and a statement tote.

What will Londoners teach me about fashion, and how will this trip alter the style I have adopted during my time at Emory? Stay tuned to my Instafeed to figure out and watch as tea time take over my #foodstagram Fridays!
