Greetings from the sunny island of Barbados! My name is Shantal Martin and I will be reporting under the WHAT TO WEAR category of the site. This coming fall, I will be entering the Manhattan School of Music as freshman focusing on Classical Vocal Performance. But this summer, I will be bringing to you the hottest Fashionistas/os in Barbados. Caribbean people are known for their relaxed and laid-back vibes, and this translates into our style. If it was summertime all the time where you lived, you would be just as relaxed as we are.
Though my Caribbean environment influences my outlook on life, I never let it dictate my fashion sense. I am obsessed with fall fashion. I own countless knit skirts, scarfs and sweaters, and I am notorious for never dressing for the weather. I love anything high-waisted. My staple shoes are my combat boots, but I will occasionally swap them out for some snazzy heels. My favorite thing about myself is my huge curly hair. As far as shopping goes, I am the bargain QUEEN. Goodwill, Salvation Army or any thrift store I get my hands on are my favourite places to play. My prized possession is a pair of nude, pointed-toe Christian Louboutain pumps with the currently trendy metallic cap and cutouts for $50 from Goodwill. These are the rewards that can be reaped from hours of scouring through secondhand clothing!
That being said, my style is a mishmash of influences from different decades. I love pinup-style clothing and anything leather. I prefer to match sweet and grunge, but sometimes I wear each style separately. I am not usually a person who usually likes to wear colors, but this year I made a resolution to wear more bright colors and I am really beginning to love it!
The outfit I am wearing here features a floral patterned peplum blouse with a neon pink Peter Pan collar, which I accessorized with a chunky charm gold necklace from Forever 21. I’m rocking my favorite red crushed velvet leggings, which I scored at Goodwill, paired with strappy wedges with pearl beaded details and my monogrammed neon yellow Cambridge satchel bag.
I am looking forward to adding my work to this great website and I really hope you appreciate Barbados’ take on fashion! It’s going to be a wicked summer ride and I’m excited to show you my neck of the woods.
