In grade nine I was put into a sewing class as an elective and I pleaded and begged to be switched out of it and put into digital media with all of my friends. I was told by my mum that if I stuck with it for two weeks, I could switch out. What can I say? All it took was two weeks for me to absolutely fall in love with sewing and fashion. From that point on, I knew that fashion design would be my future and I worked hard to gain as much experience in high school as I could. I competed in as many high school competitions as I could, achieving great results and strengthening my drive to become successful in the industry.
Growing up in a small town in British Columbia, I knew there was very little opportunity for fashion design in the area, so I ventured off to Toronto to attend Ryerson University in order to earn a bachelor’s degree in fashion design. While school has been stressful, and exhausting, I am thrilled to say I completed my first of four years! I often reminisce on how heavy and life-changing my course load was. The copious amounts of all-nighters, the sweat, tears and blood that went into my projects and the lack of a social life really drained my energy. And in complete honesty, I wouldn’t change a single second of it. The past year of school was easily the most rewarding thing I have done in my life.
My favorite thing about fashion is how everyone has the ability to express their creativity and beliefs through their dress. It is so versatile that one piece of clothing can be worn hundreds of ways. The possibilities really are endless for all Fashionistas and Fashionistos. I would consider my style to be very relaxed, comfortable, and feminine. During the summer, I will often be seen rocking a maxi dress, wearing a loose tank tucked into boyfriend shorts or cozied up in a flannel and my 20 wears per wash jeans for the cooler nights.
This summer I am so excited to be a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista! I will be living in my hometown in the Okanagan Valley, working full-time and spending the rest of my days with friends, and laying around the beautiful beaches here. I plan to take some trips out to Vancouver and Victoria this summer, as well, so expect some articles on Fashionistos along the stunning West Coast. I believe my weekly articles for LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS section will be challenging, as I have always focused on women’s fashion; but I know with hard work and practice, my articles will be strong and compelling. I can’t wait to explore new styles and fashions and devote my time towards being a Style Guru.
