“Dress like to person you want to become,” was something my mom told me at least once a week. And now I’m finally embracing her advice. After too many years of being awkward and consistently “remaking my image,” I’m coming into my own and expressing myself. My name is Sarah Collins, and I’m a sophomore at Syracuse University studying towards a B.F.A. in Illustration and a minor in Visual Culture. I truly believe that good style comes from looking within and projecting to the future. Being a Style Guru is giving me a chance to document a time in fashion’s great history and bring to you the latest and greatest of Upstate New York style!
My style comes from a love of classic silhouettes and a wide range of textures. I aspire to have a pair of black leggings in every fabric imaginable – vegan leather, sequin, feather… you name it, I’ve gotta have it! Even though I push my own fashion boundaries and try (most) any trend at least once, I’m a comfort-seeking bargain-hunter at heart.
As evidenced in this outfit, I love to play with color and patterning on a daily basis. The Franco Sarto heels and clutch wallet from Urban Outfitters are bold and edgy. To counterbalance my accessories I’ve chose a modern take on a classic dress shape (this Forever 21 number is fun yet versatile). Accent pieces, such as this Target skinny belt and arm candy (like these from Etsy and Donni Charm), give this casual look a personal touch.
As an illustrator for Syracuse’s What the Health! magazine and a summer intern for Ocean City magazine, I found my niche in arts journalism. I couldn’t be more excited to report weekly for CollegeFashionista and be a part of that heart-fluttering, gasp-inducing magic that we call fashion!
