STYLE GURU BIO: Sam Kulish

Hello, my name is Sam Kulish, and I am so excited to be a Style Guru this semester. I’m from a small town in Ohio, which isn’t too far from Kent State University, where I am currently studying fashion design. I chose the major early on in life. I have always been picky with the clothing I bought and would draw outfits I wish I could buy in stores. That hobby led me to teaching myself how to sew, and as the years progressed, I continued fine tuning both my drawing and sewing skills. Kent State has allowed me to showcase my talents and experience a new realm of the fashion world, as I hope CollegeFashionista will too!

Along with being a full time student, I also work at a clothing store named Chico’s. The job is very hands-on as far as costumer service goes, so I have the great opportunity of learning how to sell to different people and also having a blast doing it. At work, I not only get to help set up displays to show off our merchandise, but I also get to help shoppers piece together outfits that they feel great in, which is my favorite part of the job. In addition to working, I also buy and sell clothes on Poshmark, which is sort of like an online Plato’s Closet. This helps me keep my wardrobe fresh and interesting while on a college student budget.

My favorite aspect of the fashion world is that your clothing speaks for you. What you wear reveals a lot about who you are and the person you are presenting to the world. The biggest influence on my style is probably my taste in music. I listen to a lot of grunge and punk rock bands, and that part of my personality is evident in the way I dress. I would describe my personal style as a collaboration of edginess and sophistication; a pair of ripped skinny jeans, ankle booties, red lipstick and a tailored blazer is one of my go-to outfits. Some of my favorite stores and brands to shop include Boohoo, H&M, Forever 21, Victoria’s Secret and Charlotte Russe.

With my busy schedule, it’s sometimes a battle to make time for hobbies. But when I do have time to myself, I like to spend it drawing, knitting or piecing together outfits on Polyvore, which is website that allows you to create collages of clothing from all around the Internet.

I’m looking forward to my time as a Style Guru. I hope to find tons of style inspiration from colleges from all over the country and also observe more from my own university.
