STYLE GURU BIO: Ruqayyah Mohammed

Hello fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Ruqayyah Mohammed. I am a first year Communication Studies student at York University and I look forward to being a Style Guru this semester!

Fashion has always played a large role in my life. Growing up, the most exciting moments were those I spent dressing up, touching and identifying the difference between silk and sequins, while learning to mix and match different shades and hues to create very unique looks. As I grew older, skimming the pages of Vogue became a habit I could never resist! It was, to me, a learning tool. I was always mesmerized at the detailed and beautiful pieces of art that filled the pages, whether it was the flowing waves of color seen on silky Hermès scarves, the unique silhouettes on the runways of Alexander McQueen or the classic look of a woollen Chanel suit, every page was a masterpiece. Although my imagination was constantly filled with beautiful garments, I never took any risks with my own outfits. I always reached for the trends worn by my peers and unfortunately, it stayed that way up until I found out what my true sense of style was.

Watching movies such as Grease, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Sabrina really helped mold my sense of style, in addition to my obsession with Gossip Girl! I found my own sense of style in the pink jackets worn by the Pink Ladies, the elegance of a simply gorgeous black dress on Audrey Hepburn and, of course, the charming and quirky garments seen on Blair Waldorf.

Individuality is the single most important aspect of fashion. Fashion is one way we can show the world who we really are, I look forward to learning about all of the Fashionistas/os I meet this semester simply by admiring their sense of style. Not only am I super exited to learn about amazing individuals through their style, I am so happy to have the chance to be inspired by the many RAD outfits I see on campus!
