My name is Riley Alexander and I could not be more thrilled to be part of the CollegeFashionista team this spring! I’m a sophomore at James Madison University majoring in Media Arts and Design (SMAD) with a concentration in Journalism. I have always had a love for writing, but my passion for fashion came at a later start in my life. Growing up in Richmond, Virginia, I always wore a uniform, having no ability to express my individuality through accessorizing due to strict principles and rigorous rules. As I matured, so did my style. I abandoned the cookie cutter style my fellow classmates pursued and finally started my fashion journey that I am continuing today.
When first coming to JMU in Harrisonburg, Virginia, I was a bit precautious on dressing outside of the box. Having the ability to wear my own clothes around campus was so unfamiliar, yet so exciting for me. I decided that college was my chance to express myself to thousands of new faces on campus through the clothes I was wearing. Now, the sidewalks and hallways of JMU campus have become my runway.
In the wise words of the fabulous stylist Rachel Zoe, “Style is a way to say who you are without speaking,” and couldn’t be more right with this statement. To me, having style is the most expressive and creative way to communicate with others who are you and who you can become. That’s what is so great about fashion is that it has no boundaries at all. One day I can strut myself in a pair of leather pants and an edgy fringe top and the next I can sport a flirty dress with cowboy boots. With the help of Forever 21, Tobi and Urban Outfitters, I can keep my style changing to one trend to the next.
I’m so looking forward to heading back to Harrisonburg in a few weeks to show off all the wonderful Fashionistas and Fashionistos that James Madison University has to offer!
