STYLE GURU BIO: Rebecca J. Cubero

Hola, fashion lovers! My name is Rebecca J. Cubero and I am a junior at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Public Relations and Advertising is my major here, but I am also a fashion student at a small institute nearby. As a new intern at CollegeFashionista, I am super excited to welcome all of you, Style Gurus and general fashion enthusiasts, to the Caribbean.

For years, fashion has been my gateway to self-expression. My love for style began during the early stages of my life. My mother has always been a part-time seamstress, and I believe she is responsible for my devotion to this beautiful industry. Today, we are working together on establishing our very own clothing brand. Activities that involve gastronomy, performing arts and tourism are at the top of my list of hobbies, and usually serve as the basis of my inspiration. On the other hand, in my list of obsessions, you can find white-on-black polka-dot prints, pantsuits, trendy sneakers, anything backless and…Beyoncé.

Coming from a place where there’s summer all year-round, I have developed a knack for styling colorful prints and light fabrics. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a complete sucker for simplicity, basics and neutrals. The look I am wearing is something I will usually opt for on a laid back day going about town. I started with a simple black Forever 21 top and some high-waisted light wash jeans from Express. To top it off, I added a green military jacket wrapped around my waist. A definite must-have when it comes to living on an island, is a nice pair of sunnies. Today, I’m sporting a pair of metallic cat-eye Quay Australia sunglasses. Being an avid promoter of my local fashion industry, I chose to wear this edgy necklace made by Nika Soro, a talented Puerto Rican jewelry designer. Since you can never go wrong with a bit of print, I finished my look with some leopard print sneakers.

I really look forward to joining my loves for photography, writing and bright summer weather in order to show you all the amazing street style I witness around me day to day. The fashion devotees here at the University of Puerto Rico have a lot to share with the world and I am honored to be the medium that will make it happen.
