STYLE GURU BIO: Rebecca Collins

Style Guru Bio

My name is Rebecca Collins, and I’m a fashion design and business student at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia. I began writing for CollegeFashionista in May 2011, this will be my final semester as a Style Guru as I am graduating in May. The idea of graduation is bittersweet, but I am excited to photograph the best campus style Moore has to offer one last time.

My experience in fashion ranges from Moore’s rigorous academic program to working at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week and Mercedes-Benz Miami Swim Week. I’ve worked as a stylist and assistant at Boutiques in Philadelphia, and have have been featured by NBC Philadelphia for style. This past summer I had the honor of interning with Pitusa in Miami. These experiences have helped shape my personal style and my views of the fashion industry.

Aside from nearly two years of giving style advice, I have an additional lifetime of style lessons. When I was a toddler, I broke my ankle wearing plastic high heels while running in a grocery store. Lesson learned: don’t run in heels. A few years later I stubbornly insisted on wearing a gorgeous velvet dress to an outdoor ballet in July. Lesson learned: dress according to your environment (and sometimes your mom is right). My twenty-two years of trial and error have provided me with the tools to continue developing and enhancing my own personal style, which is the most important thing to all Fashionistas and Fashionistos. You can’t buy style, and my goal is to help all my fellow Fashionistas further develop their own individual style, as I further mine.

My personal style is influenced by nostalgia and memories, whether it’s movies like Clueless or the summer I lived in oversized sweaters layered over a bikini. I like mixing high and low elements, like hoodies with satin maxi skirts or designer pieces with thrift store finds. I’ve built my wardrobe to be easily intermixed and I like to be comfortable—with the exception of my need to wear 6 inch platforms.

This spring I’m looking forward to ultra thin cropped sweaters, neon velvets, swimwear mixed into everyday and mini skirts!
