STYLE GURU BIO: Rachel Mallouk

Hello fellow Fashionista/os! Welcome to another semester of fashion and fun. I am excited to sign on for a third semester to take you on a tour of Toronto’s best dressed. I currently study cinema and digital media studies at York University so you will commonly find me referencing the iconic styles of celebrities such as Winona Ryder or specific aesthetic themes from films and shows.

I may not study fashion but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t worked its way into every aspect of my life. Whether it’s dressing to meet clients or hitting the books at the library you’ll bet that my walk in closet is literally overflowing with endless options.

This fall I am all about the neutral colors and vintage finds. I will always make sure that when a Fashionista/o is toting a vintage piece to include the name of the store from which it was purchased. Toronto is home to some of the best vintage markets in Canada and it’s a great way to snag some trendy finds without breaking the bank!

When I get dressed in the morning, comfort is my main goal. I like to stick to things with soft fabrics whose textures compliment each other. Materials such as velvet and suede are making a huge impact on the fashion industry right now. We see them in the new Kendall and Kylie Line making an appearance on boots and dresses. The idea behind using these fabrics in a neutral color is to create a solid but gentle look.

To give my outfits a little edge, I am currently obsessed with knee-high or over-the-knee shoes. These can be gladiator inspired sandals or my personal favorite, thigh or knee-high boots. These shoes can take a simple outfit into something really attention grabbing. My other favorite thing about thigh-highs is that they are trending right now in gentle fabrics like suede! Not only are they comfortable to walk around in but they can also be matched with similar colors and fabrics in your outfit to tie it all together, or stand alone as the soft focus point of an outfit.
