STYLE GURU BIO: Rachel Hersey

Hi everyone! My name is Rachel Hersey and I’m a sophomore at New York University, majoring in Business with concentrations in Marketing and Statistics. This is my first semester as a CollegeFashionista Style Guru, and I’m so excited!

I am an all-around fashion, interior design and beauty enthusiast. I love writing about my fashion finds and NYC adventures on my blog Hersey Kisses where I share my favorite outfits and feature a ‘Sartorial Star’ each week!

I was born and raised right in Manhattan, but lived in Taipei, Taiwan for three years and went to high school in Connecticut. When it came time to pick a college, I jumped at the opportunity to move back to New York City as soon as I could! Living abroad as a child and growing up in a bi-racial household has shaped who I am as a person and impacted my personal style immensely. My style takes inspiration from the streets of New York and my peers around me (oh, and Olivia Palermo, of course).

Fashion is a huge part of my life. Some people don’t see the purpose and don’t think fashion plays an important role in the world, but it really does. What you wear and how you choose to present yourself tells the world who you are without words. It’s an incredibly crucial component of self expression. And anyways, shopping is just downright fun!

I would describe my style as city-chic. I tend to wear a lot of black, burgundy and navy in the form of slim-cut trousers and tailored tops. My one exception to the dark colored theme is cobalt blue. I can’t get enough of it. My favorite thing in my closet is definitely my faux fur vest from Elie Tahari. In the colder months, I wear it over long sleeves and under jackets. It goes with just about anything. My favorite places to shop are Topshop, PinkyOtto, Nordstrom, Mango and, occasionally, Brandy Melville.

I love this outfit because it’s so simple. When you’re running late for class, it’s easy to put on tailored black pants and a striped top. You can easily dress it up with a clean-cut jacket. This combo is guaranteed to match just about any shoes you have, making it great for a busy Fashionista. I love these gray suede booties because they are so unique. Rolling up the hems of the pants makes the look a little more laid back and playfully shows off your ankles.

I have an extremely exciting (and busy) semester ahead, with a full course load, an internship at Kleinfeld Bridal and, of course, a position as a Style Guru at CollegeFashionista. I look forward to sharing my appreciation for fashion with you through my lens. Check out my personal blog regularly for all things style and NYC.
