Hello, my fashion loving friends! My name is Phoebe Neuman, and I am a second year English and Communication Studies major at UCLA. Fashion and writing are my two biggest passions, and I am so excited to be able to bring them together by becoming a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista.
My fascination with all things fashion started when I picked up my first fashion magazine at the tender age of 10. I would pour over the editorials, and eventually I gained an appreciation for the writing that came along with the beautiful images. Many people see fashion as a vapid pursuit of looking “pretty,” but for me, it is so much more. What we choose to put on our backs is a representation of who we are and who we want to be—which is a pretty powerful thing. If that’s not a reason to step out of your Ramen stained sweat pants, then I don’t know what is!
My love for fashion has turned me into an avid people watcher. Seeing what people on campus, as well as around the streets of Los Angeles, are wearing is the main source of inspiration for my own style. When I see someone wearing something I find truly inspiring, I will more likely than not rush back to my dorm in between classes to change into something more like what they were wearing. So if you see me staring you down, I promise I’m not trying to be creepy, I’m just trying to figure out how I could make your outfit work for me!
Now that I am a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista, I can’t wait push myself to pay even closer attention to what the people around me are wearing, and to consider styles that aren’t necessarily my own. Getting dressed in the morning for me consists of trying on as many outfits as possible and tearing apart my closet (sorry roommates!) to find exactly what I am looking for. I usually end up going with an outfit that mixes staples like high-waisted skinny jeans and a striped top with more bohemian pieces, like a printed kimono.
I often get stuck wearing this “uniform” of sorts, so one of my New Year’s resolutions is to branch out within my own closet. I own so many great pieces that I never wear, and I want to challenge myself to find fresh new ways to style them.
There are so many UCLA students that have amazing and unique styles, and I can’t wait to share all of the Fashionistas/os that I spot around campus with you in my FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT/ STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK column.
