Hi there! My name is Nicole and I am a third year student at Toronto’s Ryerson University. I am so thrilled to be part of the Style Guru team this semester and my goal is to transpire my passion for clothes to all my readers in hopes that they too can feel that same passion! In terms of my style, I am all over the place. However, I always try and wrap my outfit around the environment I live in- urban, chic and fun. You can typically catch me having a little shopping time at Zara, H&M or Forever 21, and if I’m not shopping, I’m at home reading the latest issue of ELLE or Vogue.
With each new season that comes our way, I like to buy a signature piece for my wardrobe that I have not owned before. This season, I’ve caught myself wrapped up in a new found obsession for culottes! Yup, the pants that are not quite pants, but not quite shorts either!
I found my first pair after a trip to England this past June and they have been building in my wardrobe ever since. Now with four pairs in counting, you can catch me pairing my culottes with pretty much everything in my closet. Looking for a way to rock them on campus? Go for something similar to the look I have chosen; a crop top, some strappy flat sandals, and a classic leather jacket. I love this look because of it’s versatility. I can wear this to Monday morning class and then Friday night to dinner with friends.
Looking for the right culotte can be difficult, so here are a couple tips to finding the pair that is perfect for you! Firstly, be sure to pick the right length! Being almost 5’9, I have had some struggles finding a pair that will sit at the right spot on my leg. You want the pants sit between your knee and the middle of your calf. Also, pick a print that you will feel comfortable in. These pants can take some time to get used to, so I would suggest sticking to a more subtle colour on your first pair. The more neutral the colour, the easier they are to outfit. Lastly, find a silhouette that works for your shape! If you are particularly petite, look for a pair that will hug you a little tighter—an oversized pair will overwhelm your figure.
