My name is Monica Contreras, but some people call me GC referring to my second name Gabriela. I’m an international student currently residing at the U.S. I decided to join CollegeFashionista as a way of stepping into the fashion industry because I would love to become a well-known “Beauty Brain” someday. “What’s that?” you may ask. It is a simple and odd term for the science and fashion lovers, like myself. As a chemistry major, my dream is to become a cosmetic chemist and be able to work in the manufacturing of beauty products.
When I was a younger, I wasn’t the girl that shopped a lot. My mother and I would constantly disagree on clothing when we went to the mall. Until my teenage years, my go-to accessories were my Converse shoes. However, when I turned 15, I started to travel the world and learn about different cultures and designers. I particularly fell in love with the Avenue des Champs-Élysées’ Louis Vuitton and that’s when I understood that fashion is not just a single trend that is followed or fancy articles of clothing. Fashion is one of the most beautiful and expressive arts in existence. I captured all of these new experiences with one of my most precious gifts, my DSLR camera.
Photography, which became one of my passions as I started high school, goes hand in hand with the fashion world. I started to learn editing by looking up at the pictures in high-fashion magazines, such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. In my spare time I love taking pictures. Sometimes the process of acquiring the perfect shot or finding a creative theme for a shoot can become an obsession. In the end, the magnificence of scenarios created in your imagination challenges what reality may give you. That’s what fashion is made for, to challenge the indescribable minds to visually project their ideas.
Elsa Schiaparelli has to be my style icon of choice. I have always had an attraction to the miscellaneous and I like to use as many colors as I can when dressing up. I am one of those people who have boots in every color but I am also a high heels lover. I can wear a floral dress for an ordinary school day and rock a Red Hot Chili Peppers shirt the next. The truth is, I don’t follow a specific trend but I do like to dress properly for every occasion.
I am beyond excited and grateful for this opportunity that CollegeFashionista has given to me by contributing each week writing STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK. Be aware, you never know if you might be wearing the next statement piece of the season!
