STYLE GURU BIO: Monica Chon

Greetings, Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Monica Chon, and I am a senior at the University of Washington and a Communications major. This fall will mark my third year writing for CollegeFashionista and I could not be more honored or excited.

My first encounter with fashion occurred at the age of one year old when my mom and I walked into a local boutique. As she began browsing through the clothes, she heard sighs of awe and wonder coming from my stroller. When she peeked inside to figure out what the sounds were, she realized that I was the one making them. According to her, my eyes were also sparkling in fascination with the clothing in the store. Ever since then, I have been held spellbound by fashion. The colors, fabrics, patterns, styles, influences and trends are only a few aspects of fashion that I love to research and document.

I try to experiment with different styles as often as I can, since the trial and error process is a great way to discover what you feel the most comfortable in. If I had to describe my personal style, though, I would say that I gravitate towards minimalistic styles. Solid colors and light accessories typically compose my everyday outfit. I love timeless pieces, such as classic overcoats, chambray shirts and red lipstick.

As a Style Guru, my goal is to not only shine light on popular trends, but to uncover new ones. While trends are always fun to observe, there is nothing more special than discovering unique styles that contrast from what is current. Oftentimes, I believe that they can even look better. I admire originality in fashion, as well as boldness to venture out from what is considered normal.

Lastly, I hope to empower people. Fashion, like any other art, is a creative outlet. I would like to encourage people to not be afraid to be themselves, even if their style is unlike the majority. After all, we look our best when we feel our best and no outfit is complete without confidence.

I feel so lucky to have the opportunity of presenting Seattle fashion to CollegeFashionista viewers. Please look out for my articles every month!
