My name is Mikayla Dent and I am a junior at the University of Kentucky where I am majoring in Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles! I am so thrilled to be a CollegeFashionista Style Guru this semester. When I was a little girl, I always dreamed of working in the fashion industry—usually as a fashion designer or stylist. Now, I’m grown up and it’s time for me to make my dreams come true, I am on the path to becoming a working fashion stylist.
When I first started at the University of Kentucky, I was unsure of what opportunities there would be for a fashion student since Lexington, Kentucky is better known for its horse races than its fashion shows, but in the last year I have been given endless opportunities. Just a few include visiting Atlanta’s Fashion Market, studying abroad to Paris and going on fashion tours in New York City. While growing up, I thought I would be going to college in one of America’s fashion hubs but I could not be more proud to be a Kentucky Wildcat!
I would call my style playfully classic. I love clean lines and tailored pieces but I also love to have fun with clothes. I get most of my inspiration from Pinterest, which is a website I spend more time on then I’d like to admit (sorry professors). My two biggest celebrity inspirations are Blake Lively and Ashley Benson. I‘m inspired by Blake because she mixes classic and fun pieces, and Ashley because she mixes classic with edgy; both girls are amazing style icons.
My go-to summer outfit is a loose high-neck swing dress in a neutral color paired with a long necklace (usually something with some sparkle), diamond stud earrings, my go to Jack Roger’s sandals, and my bag of the moment. I love this outfit because it’s effortless and is perfect for any occasion whether it be running to the mall or grabbing dinner with the girls. Right now, I am all about mixing neutrals with a hint of color to brighten things up for summer and I am loving the trend of subtle feminine details that designers such as Victoria Beckham and Phillip Lim have incorporated into their lines. Most importantly, I believe in dressing in whatever makes you feel confident! When you feel good, you look good.
