“Fashions fade, but style is eternal.” Yves Saint Laurent has a point here, and an eye for fashion and style according to my clutch. You see, style is something you’re born with while your fashion sense is something that develops as you grow. It can change at any point and it’s something that can be learned by say picking up a magazine or watching E!. My point is that style should be on your metaphorical back burner and always there to help guide your wardrobe decisions. Fashion on the other hand, is something that you can turn on and off. For example, this season you may love the hottest trends, but next season you’re hating what Vogue deems as the next major fashion statement. That’s okay because when trendy becomes too much for you to handle, turn to style.
Although I truly stand by what I have just said, this outfit, as bold and bright as it may be, is an example of what’s fashionable right now. Let’s be honest, in two years or even next season, the pure fact that my skort is as bright as a highlighter may be fashion felony. Even further, who knows if bold colors and even bolder patterns will be acceptable! In fact, whose to say skorts will even survive many more seasons? I don’t have the answers to any of these questions; so for my last night out this summer, I decided to enjoy my favorite trends…while I still could.
What better way to say bye-bye to hot summer days and even hotter summer nights than with short shorts and a crop top. Before I divulge the secrets to my look, let me re-reintroduce myself. My name is Melyssa Granat and this is my sixth semester as a Style Guru. I’m a rising junior at The George Washington University majoring in Journalism/Mass Communications and Dance. I’m a Long Island girl at heart, so as much as I class it up in the nation’s Capitol, the sass in my style will never fade away.
That’s a little bit about me, so here’s a little bit about my outfit. The center of attention is clearly the skort; between its color and size, you can’t miss it. Hot pink is a color typically reserved for Barbie, but with tan legs and summer confidence, you’ll rethink the color. Unless you’re being Elle Woods for Halloween, I suggest shying away from a matching hot pink top. Instead, try a solid black or white crop top, unless you’re able to find a mix of the two like I did. Black and white go with everything and since the skort is solid, a printed top is definitely allowed. Throw on some strappy sandals, a few black bangles, a great clutch and you are the epitome of this season’s hottest fashions.
