Playing dress up in kindergarten taught me one thing: I can dress up and become whoever I want (although becoming Posh Spice didn’t really work out for me). As a junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, I still love dressing up. Sure, there are days where I am tempted to rock my “two hours of sleep” look, but I swore I would never wear sweat pants to class; and I still stand by that.
The fusion of art and fashion has always been a part of me. As a painter I love layers, textures, patterns and colors. I incorporate many elements that I love about art into my style. I love designers whose works border between fashion and fine art. The beauty of fashion is that it can be done in so many ways. It can be powerful, daring and innovative. We develop our own style to communicate with others around us. The part that amazes me the most about fashion is that we can dress however we want, expressing feelings/viewpoints, and exploring new styles and trends. We develop styles that are fun, unique, and loud. It becomes an identity.
When it comes to describing my style, I can’t really put it into words. I follow many fashion blogs, designers and a few celebrities. I’m a fan of DIY and thrifting. I love trying new things and mixing up my style with changing trends. I’m currently loving the layering of sluggish sweaters over a chiffon dress to play with texture. Also, adding a statement necklace always completes an outfit.
I am very thrilled to be a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista and to be writing the LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS column. Here at the U of I, there are many fashionable students and I look forward to showcasing the Fashionistos this spring.
