STYLE GURU BIO: Melissa Him

Style Guru Bio

As much as I enjoy traveling and experiencing different cultures, nothing beats my hometown of Melbourne. I love the random things I can find in every corner: underground basements that store music records, old garages turned into rustic–typically Melbourne–cafes and, of course, the little fashion boutiques that are located in hidden laneways.  On the topic of fashion, Melbourne street-style is emerging just like any other fashion capital. You will never see double of the same outfit! Its perks are its individuality and daring Fashionista/os who push the boundaries of fashion like no other.

My name is Melissa Him and this will be my second time being a Style Guru. I enjoyed my experience so much the first time, I immediately decided I wanted to stay on for another semester. This spring semester, I’ll be studying the bachelor of design (fashion) at RMIT University and I will be covering the ACCESSORIES REPORT column. What is great about RMIT is that it holds accountable on being a very fashion-forward university. It unites a creative hub of students and respects the unique qualities of its cohort. This is definitely shown in the students’ own personal style, whom I hope to take snap shots of while I’m on campus.

I love fashion because there is always the opportunity to explore my fashion tastes and experiment with my style a bit more. As for myself, I have gone from girly-grunge to girly-girl, so now I am somewhat preppy and lady-like, with a mixture of floral. I also love designing and exploring new ideas in my sketchbook. In a couple of year’s time, I’d love to establish my own sustainable and fair-trade fashion label. So far in that category I adore People Tree, The FEED Project and TOMS, and their giving back initiative. Other than that, here are some random things about me: I’ve been a dancer for 10 years, my favourite coffee is mocha, I have a new obsession with green rose tea, my favourite band is Bloc Party and I enjoy reading books–a lot. Make sure to look out every Friday for my “Accessories Report” and I’ll give you an update on the latest shoe, handbag and jewelery trend!
