STYLE GURU BIO: Melissa deKoster

Style Guru Bio

My name is Melissa deKoster and I’m going to be sharing with you my favorite fashion trends from the lovely Central Michigan University. I’m beyond excited to be a Style Guru this semester. Fashion and photography are two of my passions, as well as sharing what I see around me in the world. I’ll be writing the ACESSORIES REPORT, as well as FASHION FROM ABROAD, so make sure you check out my posts every Friday! I’m an accessories fiend, so I can’t wait to see what great accessories I’ll find being worn this semester on campus!

I’m originally from Kingsford, Michigan but unfortunately don’t get to spend a lot of time there due to school. Currently I’m attending CMU for Apparel Design and I love it! It’s what gets me out of bed everyday. Not only do I get to express my creativity everyday but I also get to share my passion with a great group of teachers and students. Honestly, what could be better than getting that opportunity? When I’m not in school during the summer, I like to spend my time interning. Summer 2012 I spent my summer interning for Detroit based designer Lyudviga Shneyders. Summer 2013 I spent my summer with the fabulous {EM} Reservoir in Beacon, New York. Like the bird shirt I’m wearing in my photo? That’s one of her fabulous pieces!

When I’m not in the sewing lab or CAD lab you can usually find me at Starbucks catching up with friends, on the tennis court, in my kitchen baking up a storm or in my “art” room. I like to dabble in other art forms besides fashion design. I’m especially intrigued with cut paper artwork. Think construction paper is boring? Think again!

My personal style is as eclectic as my iPod, which has everything from Taylor Swift to A Day To Remember. My wardrobe features a lot of neutral colors, such as black and grey. I’m not a huge fan of prints, but I’m a big fan of Aztec print. Though I did branch out this past winter and buy a leopard print body con skirt from Urban Outfitters which I’m obsessed with! I love edgy rock and roll inspired pieces about as much as I love flowy bohemian pieces. I guess you could call my look edgy bohemian? I love accessories, especially big statement pieces. I also like boots a lot. My favorite is a pair of Guess lace up boots with zipper detail. They’re great for all seasons!

I can’t wait to get back to school next week and see all my fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos!
